The hospice initially came to us with a brief to create a website which would provide support for those accessing their services and a means to encourage fundraising and donations.
Eden Valley Hospice concentrates their services on adults whilst Jigsaw Hospice focusses on children and their families. The hospices provide vital care and respite for those who are suffering from life-limiting illnesses.
The main issue was organising a mammoth amount of information into logical digestible chunks, without overwhelming visitors to the website.
As the charity looks after two different ages groups, we created two standalone websites which pool some of their content resources using a clever plugin. This means alterations across one of the websites won't need to replicated on the other.
By extending the website beneath the fold of the screen, in line with modern browsing habits, we freed up valuable space. Graphic design principles were then heavily used to differentiate each aspect of the home page. By creative use of fonts, colours, imagery and white space, we were able to make the site much easier to navigate.
The old website did not respond to different screen sizes, which was a major functionality issue as more than half of internet traffic now comes from tablets and smartphones.
The new site offers a wealth of support for those whose lives have been affected by life-limiting illnesses. From detailing what you'd expect when arriving at the hospice to family information and carers support. It also effectively promotes the latest events by pulling together a range of information from around the website.
The interactive 'Wish List' is a new addition to the website, it allows people to purchase specific items needed in the hospice to help improve the lives of those staying there. The 'Wish List' takes online payments and has a built-in management system for donations. The system is easy to use and can be accessed by the hospice whenever they need to make changes.
The homepage has large icons to make donating to the cause effortless. The charity's online shop and lottery are also featured with prominence, as both of these have previously proved popular with the public and therefore needed to be easily accessible.
We have also created a community noticeboard which brings together events, articles and news from other parts of the website.
Behind the scenes, the website required customised programming, developing the ability to take online donations and creating the 'Wish List' and 'Lottery' features. The campaigns featured on the website have progress and countdown bars so that visitors can see how much is needed for the hospices to reach their goals. This helps encourage further donations to the appeals.
The website was built heavily around usability, ensuring visitors are able to access the information they are looking for easily whilst being supplemented further content which may be of interest.

Working with Wombat over the last 12 months has been brilliant. They have really understood what we hoped to achieve from the website and provided lots of advice on how to make our ambitions become reality.
